- Apply online or on paper
There are two ways to apply for a work permit in Canada: Online and on paper. In order to apply online, you must have a camera or a scanner to scan your documents and upload them to the system. Also, you should have a valid credit card to pay the fees.
- Get the documents from your employer
If you want to apply on paper, you must first get all the documents from your employer. You would also need to gather the necessary information from your employers in light of the type of work permit you are applying for.
- Prove you meet the eligibility criteria for the job
When applying for a work permit, you would be required to prove you meet the job descriptions and have the necessary skills, education, and work experience. In case you want to get an open work permit, you would not need to get extra papers or information from your employer to attach with the application.
- Get the application package
Use the instruction guides to fill the application. They also list down the documents you should submit along with the application. Remember, there are different forms and guides to apply for a work permit: inside Canada, outside Canada, and as you enter Canada. Be sure to do pick the suitable option.
You must prove you meet the legal requirements to work in Canada. Depending on which country you come from, you may require an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) or a visitor visa to work in Canada. The eTA or visa would be provided to you along with the work permit.
- Application fees
Payment in the local currency is supported in most countries. If you are applying on paper at a VAC, you would be required to pay the VAC fees separately. Depending on the nature of your work permit, you may qualify for fee exemption.
- Submit the application
After paying the fees, you would submit the application. If you meet the eligibility criteria for a work permit, you would get a message in your account, with instructions about the next steps.
