Correct grammar: Immigrant’s secret wepon

There are so many advantages that we take for granted while we live in a country we are born in. We are comfortable with the lifestyle, the culture,  the values, the social norms, and the language(s) we speak.

Problems start as we get to face multicultural exposure. Everyone who has traveling experience or is familiar with will agree that it is not that easy to communicate with and understand people of different culture and languages. You might not be even to ask ways to reach your destination, or anything else, for that matter. It is required that you know their language or they know yours.

Correct grammar and punctuation becomes even more important for immigrants. Especially if applying in an English speaking country, correct English can help you a lot in convincing your asylum application. Many immigrants make serious mistakes in their documentations which are very lengthy in some cases and very important as well which compromises their chances of getting positive response.

Everyone converses in English

It is certain that communication beyond your mother country can only be done using English Language. Hence, proficiency over it contains a lot of value. It becomes way more important when this communication is formal.

Formal conversations, either face to face, over phone, email or via any other means, are mostly based on English language. And you might have to indulge in numerous formal conversations if you’re planning to immigrate to a European, Oceana and North American country. From immigration officers to employers, everyone converses in English. Poor English, especially grammar, can make you look foolish and ignorant, to be honest.

Kyle Wiens, CEO at iFixit, states in his article “I won’t hire people who use poor grammar. If you think a semicolon is a regular colon with an identity crisis, I will not hire you… I have a ‘zero tolerance approach’ to grammar mistakes that make people look stupid.”
