If you’re looking to extend your stay in Canada as a full-time student, you must first apply for this extension before the expiry date on your study permit. You can complete the application to change Conditions or, you can Extend your Stay in Canada. The renewal application must be done at least 30 days before your current expiration date.
If you have received your initial study permit and you’re from a visa-exempt country then:
- In cases when your study permit was issued before August 1, 2015 you will need to apply for an eTA.
- If your study permit was issued on or after August 1, 2015, you already have an eTA. It is automatically issued to you when your initial study permit was given. It is valid for 5 years or until your passport expires. You don’t need to apply for another eTA if your eTA is still valid. If it is not, you will need to apply separately for an eTA. Use the eTA Check Status Tool to find out if your eTA is still valid.
If you have already renewed your study permit after August 1, 2015, then, you will need to apply for an eTA. This, only if you do not already have one.
If you are from a visa-required country, make sure that your visa is valid to cover the period of your extension. If not, then you will need to apply for a new visa.
