Alberta was named after Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, Queen Victoria’s fourth daughter. It’s the fourth largest Canadian province and one of the three Prairie Provinces. Almost four million people live in Alberta, most of them in the province’s two major cities: Edmonton, the capital, and Calgary. Alberta is a rich province in terms of natural resources. It’s the main producer of oil and natural gas in Canada and has 70 percent of the country’s coal reserves. It’s also the only province to produce sugar from sugar beets.
