Great news for immigrants: Montreal to be designed as a Sanctuary city

Montreal, Canada’s second largest city voted today whether the city should or shouldn’t be designed as a “sanctuary city”. If the city council approves this idea, then, Montreal can be join other Canadian cities. They are Vancouver, Toronto and Hamilton and all have strong, official policies to not discriminate all undocumented immigrants by denying them the necessary services.

Also, there is another thing to be valued. Sanctuary cities also pledge not to use immigration status as a pretext to arrest or even deport certain individuals. Especially the ones that come into contact with any law enforcement on non-criminal offences such for example are parking tickets.

Montreal Mmayor’s word…

According to Montreal Mayor, Denis Coderre, these measures are extremely important especially in dark times like these. According to Coderre, Montreal needs to provide values of justice. Also, openness and equity for their brothers and sisters from foreign countries.  He also added that it is important to give people the right tools to provide services in housing and health care.

If they approve these measures, the city services like housing, integration newcomers, and recreation will be accessible to those with and without documentation alike!

These measures will also mandate the public security committee to constantly collaborate with police. This,  in order to ensure illegal immigrants don’t have their lack of status used against them unnecessarily.
